The problem of attributing objective properties to quantum systems is discussed in this paper. In the first part the possible probabilistic features of classical and quantum theories with the emphasis on the notion of state of an individual physical system are reviewed in detail. The second part of the paper deals with composite systems in pure states. The entanglement between two distinguishable particles is thoroughly studied from the mathematical viewpoint. These mathematical results are extended to the case of subsystems of systems of identical particles. The third part is devoted to the problem of attributing properties and to the analysis of entanglement of composite systems whose constituents are identical. The relations of the subject of the paper to the nonlocal aspects of quantum mechanics are considered in the rest of the paper. The article is well structured, contains new important results and could be of interest to all who are interested in various subtle questions of quantum systems.
