Let \(\Gamma\) be a congruence subgroup of \(\text{SL}_n (\mathbb{Z})\) of level \(N\). Standard conjectures imply that any cuspidal cohomology class of \(\Gamma\) which is a Hecke eigenvector should be attached to \(p\)-adic Galois representation. This conjecture has been tested numerically for \(n=3\) in various cases. The purpose of the paper under review is to make the first computational tests for \(n=4\). The authors compute \(H^5 (\Gamma,\mathbb{C})\) for \(\Gamma= \Gamma_0(N)\) the group of all matrices with bottom row congruent to \((0,0,0,*)\) modulo \(N\). They compute the Hecke action on these spaces and relate the classes they find to classes coming from the boundary of the Borel-Serre compactification, to Eisenstein series, and to classical holomorphic modular forms of weight 2 and~4.
