Let \(G\) be a compact group acting isometrically on a Riemannian manifold \(M\). The action of \(G\) on \(M\) is called polar if \(M\) admits an embedded, connected submanifold \(\Sigma\) (called a section) which meets every orbit of \(G\) orthogonally. A hyperpolar action is a polar one, such that the induced metric on \(\Sigma\) is flat. \textit{J. Dadok} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 288, 125--137 (1985; Zbl 0565.22010)] provided the classification of polar actions on spheres and real projective spaces. In the paper under review, the authors classify completely, up to orbit equivalence, polar actions on the other compact rank-one symmetric spaces, namely, the complex projective space \(\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^n\), the quaternionic projective space \(\mathbb{H}\mathbb{P}^n\) and the Cayley plane \(\mathbb{P}_2(0)\). Polar actions on \(\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^n\) are proved to be orbit equivalent to the actions induced by isotropy representation of Hermitian symmetric spaces, while polar actions on \(\mathbb{H}\mathbb{P}^n\) are orbit equivalent to the actions induced by products of \(K\) quaternionic-Kähler manifolds, with at least \(K-s\) of them having rank one. The cohomogeneity of only polar action on \(\mathbb{P}_2(O)\) is either \(s\) or \(2\) and the compact connected subgroups of \(F_4\), acting polarly on \(\mathbb{P}_2(O)\), are completely listed.
