The authors prove the existence of infinite dimensional families of (non-Kähler) almost Kähler metrics of constant scalar curvature on certain compact manifolds. Such families are obtained as deformations of Kähler metrics with constant scalar curvature, and the usual approach of using the Banach-space implicit function theorem is employed. The relevant surjectivity condition here for the implicit function theorem is the non-degeneracy of the linearized Futaki invariant on the starting Kähler class, which was previously used in \textit{C. Le Brun} and \textit{S. R. Simanca} [Geom. Funct. Anal. 4, 179-200 (1994; Zbl 0801.53050)]. However in this paper, the authors give rather specific and efficient deformations, so that their metrics are non-Kähler only on any open subset where the tangent bundle is trivial. In the case of complex surfaces, they use deformations involving holomorphic 2-forms to produce almost Kähler metrics which are pointwise conformal to Kähler ones. The authors also consider the problem of prescribing scalar curvature of almost Kähler metrics on tori of dimensions bigger than 4.
