    This paper describes a feedback linearizing control of unsteady two-dimensional flow of viscous fluid past a horizontal circular cylinder. Two finite-dimensional lower-order models I and II based on proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) are considered. These models are obtained using control function and penalty function methods, respectively. The authors derive adaptive control systems for mode amplitude trajectory controls of N-input and N-output flow models. It is shown that model I has nontrivial zero-error dynamics, and the stability of closed-loop systems may be valid only local. But for model II, exact feedback linearization and global adaptive trajectory make a pair. However, the authors assume that all the mode amplitudes precisely follow some prescibed reference trajectories in spite of large parameter uncertainties. It is found that in the closed-loop system, unsteadiness in mode amplitudes can be suppressed in spite of large uncertainties in the flow model. The authors also mention several important questions about POD models which remain to be answered. In particular, one of this question refers to the relative merit of the two POD models in describing the mode response characteristics.
