Let \(P^n\) denote a mod \(p\) Moore space with top cell in dimension \(n\). A space \(X\) is \(K/p_*\)-acyclic if \(K_*(X;\mathbb{Z}_p)\) is trivial and a map \(f:X\to Y\) is a \(K/p_*\)-equivalence if the induced map in mod~\(p\) \(K\)-homology theory is an isomorphism. In this paper, the authors consider certain Adams self maps which are modified by adding unstable maps. The main result is the theorem 1.1: ``each obtained map \(f:P^n\to P^s\) (for arbitrarily large \(s)\) is a \(K/p^*\)-equivalence and the cofiber \(C(f)\) is \(K/p_*\)-acyclic (here \(C(f)\) denotes the cone on \(f)\). The map \(\Omega f\) is not a \(K/p_*\)-equivalence and the loop space \(\Omega C(f)\) is not \(K/p_*\)-acyclic.'' The specific tool used by the authors is the notion of an inert set. As a corollary, they obtain that the map \(f\) is a \(K\)-theory equivalence but not a \(v_1\)-periodic equivalence (theorem 4.8.) Finally, the authors use the modified maps to construct spaces whose Bousfield class is distinct from the cofiber of the Adams map but which becomes the same after one suspension.
