Continuing his earlier work [Adv. Math. 159, 51--67 (2001; Zbl 1002.28004)], the author studies properties of the perimeter measure in quite general metric measure spaces. Influenced by the works of \textit{V. Gol'dshtein} and \textit{M. Troyanov} [Expo. Math 19, No. 4, 289--336 (2001; Zbl 1006.46023)] and \textit{M. Miranda} [J. Math. Pures Appl. (9) 82, No. 8, 975--1004 (2003)], the author relaxes the assumptions of his earlier work by introducing an axiomatic approach to the notion of differentiable structure. Among other things, he shows that the perimeter measure \(P(E,\cdot)\) is concentrated on the essential boundary of the set \(E\) consisting of points where neither the density of \(E\) nor the density of the complement of \(E\) is zero and, furthermore, the perimeter measure can be represented in terms of a suitable Hausdorff-type measure. The motivation of the paper is well presented.
