The monograph deals with quantitative analysis and control design of piecewise continuous-time dynamic systems. It consists of 9 chapters and Appendices A, B, C. Chapter 1 introduces a computational frame for the analysis of piecewise linear systems (PLS) using the Lyapunov approach. Chapter 2 deals with piecewise linear modelling. An explicit matrix representation of the model is derived. Models with norm-bounded uncertainties and smooth nonlinearities are also included. Solution concepts, interconnection properties, and memory-efficient model representation are discussed. Chapter 3 introduces some basic tools for the analysis of PLS such as equilibrium points and the steady-state characteristic, constraint verification and invariance, and detecting attraction sliding modes on cell boundaries. Chapter 4 is devoted to Lyapunov stability. The key notions for the construction of Lyapunov functions are presented. It is shown how piecewise quadratic and piecewise linear Lyapunov functions can be computed via convex optimization. Chapter 5 deals with dissipativity analysis via convex optimization and the computation of an \(L_2\)-induced gain. Chapter 6 is concerned with controller design. Quadratic stabilization of PLS and controller synthesis based on piecewise quadratics are considered. Chapter 7 presents four selected extensions such as estimation of regions of attraction, rigorous analysis of smooth nonlinear systems, automated partition refinements, and fuzzy logic systems. Chapter 8 deals with linear hybrid dynamic systems. Stability analysis using both discontinuous Lyapunov functions and Lyapunov functionals are considered. Chapter 9 presents concluding remarks. Appendix A surveys various computational concepts which are used in the previous text. Proofs of all assertions from previous chapters are collected in Appendix B. Appendix C is a bibliography. The book is an extended version of the author's PhD thesis. Researchers and advanced postgraduate students working in the area of control engineering find this monograph an up-to-date reference in Lyapunov-based analysis and control design for piecewise linear systems.
