Characterizations of ordinal spaces via continuous selections (Q1612241)

The author improves a recent result of \textit{S. Fujii} and \textit{T. Nogura} [Topology Appl. 91, 65-69 (1999; Zbl 0926.54011)] on the characterization of compact ordinal spaces by means of continuous (with respect to the Vietoris topology) selections. The present paper shows that the earlier result can be extended to all ordinal spaces by adding extensions of selections to the one-point compactification. When one uses the Fell topology instead of the Vietoris topology, the added condition on extensions of selections is not needed. Two more characterizations of ordinal spaces are given, where the added condition on extension is replaced by the existence of a special compact cover. Examples are provided showing that no condition in the theorems may be omitted.
