Let \(\mathbb CP^m\) be the complex projective space, and let \(M\) be a smooth cohomology \(\mathbb CP^m\) with \(m<12\) which supports an almost effective smooth \(Pin(2)\)-action which is trivial on cohomology. If \(m\) is odd, it is assumed, in addition, that the action has a fixed point. Using results of his earlier paper [Math. Ann. 315, No. 4, 511-528 (1999; Zbl 0963.19002)], the author proves that the total Pontryagin class of \(M\) is standard (that is, \(p(M)= (1+x^2)^{m+1}\), where \(x\) is a generator of the cohomology group \(H^2(M;\mathbb Z)\)). This result is related to a conjecture due to T. Petrie.
