The present paper deals with differential algebraic equations of the form \[ A(t)(D(t), x(t))'+ B(t) x(t)= q(t),\quad t\in I.\tag{1} \] For well matched equations, that is, \(R(D(t))\oplus N(A(t))= \mathbb{R}^n\) of differential index 1 or 2 unique solveability for \(t\in I\) is shown when system (1) is completed with an appropriate initial condition. Moreover, estimations of \(x\) and \(Dx'\) on compact intervals \(I\) are given. In the next section equation (1) is attacked with numerical integration methods. It is shown that for backward differentiation formulae the numerical discretization and the decoupling techniques presented in the last section commute. This is a useful tool to analyze the behaviour of the numerical method. Finally, generalizations to partial differential algebraic equations are displayed.
