    A new model to describe the behaviour of shape memory alloys is proposed. Shape memory alloys have the property of manifesting crystalline phase transformations between a highly symmetric, highly ordered austenitic structure and a low symmetric, low ordered martensitic structure. Martensitic structure is achieved by decreasing the temperature or applying a mechanical force creating a large deformation during this process. The model is based on specifying rather simple one-dimensional constitutive relations between stresses, deformations and temperature on a number of microplanes. Then the actual three-dimensional behaviour of the alloy is predicted by superposing all microplanes. A numerical algorithm is developed for this purpose, and it is shown that some experimental results and numerical simulations agree fairly well.
