The author investigates left exactness of the functor associating to a discrete group \(G\) its \(n\)th bounded cohomology \(H^n_b(-,{\mathbb R})\) with trivial coefficients \({\mathbb R}\). In order to put his statements into perspective, let us recall that whilst this functor is always left exact for \(n\leq 2\), very little is known at all about bounded cohomology for general degrees \(n\). The first result of the article under consideration is that the inflation maps \(H^n_b(\Pi,{\mathbb R})\to H^n_b(\Gamma,{\mathbb R})\) induced by group extensions \(1\to G\to \Gamma\to \Pi\to 1\) with amenable holonomy are always injective. Then the author proceeds to investigate the class \(\Lambda\) of all groups \(\Pi\) for which every extension \(1\to G\to \Gamma\to \Pi\to 1\) induces an injection at the level of \(H^n_b(-,{\mathbb R})\). Numerous examples are given, and stability properties are established for the class \(\Lambda\). (The definition of \({\mathbb F}\) on page~260 contains a slight mistake).
