The authors consider \(D\)-dimensional cosmological solutions, for which the normal matter component is a viscous fluid and the quintessence component is a perfect fluid of negative pressure (an x-fluid). Recall that quintessence is a hypothetical explanation of the recently observed accelerated expansion of the universe. Early models suffered from the so-called cosmic coincidence problem: if the quintessence density \(\rho^{(1)}\) is comparable to the normal matter density \(\rho^{(2)}\) today, then their initial ratio had to be tuned very neatly. The 2-component model presented in this paper is shown to be free of the cosmic coincidence problem if the normal matter is a viscous fluid. Namely, authors find the corresponding exact isotropic cosmological solution and show that the ratio \(\rho^{(1)}/\rho^{(2)}\) converges to a nonzero constant as \(t \to \infty\). The constant itself depends on the coefficient \(\zeta_0\) of proportionality between the bulk viscosity and the Hubble parameter. Exact anisotropic solutions are discussed as well and it is shown that too strong viscosity may prevent the extra dimensions from getting compactified during evolution.
