The authors describe a method in which the transient thermomechanical behaviour of sliding systems with frictional heating such as brakes and clutches is approximated by a reduced-order model describing one or more dominant perturbations or eigenfunctions. It is shown that, if the system is discretized using the finite element method, a complete eigenfunction expansion provides an excellent computationally efficient solution with quite coarse discretization in the time domain.
