Pointwise semicontinuous smooth norms (Q1614911)

A deep connection between the Gâteaux smoothness and the weak compact generating of spaces is proved. Let \(X\) be a Banach space and \(Y\) a normed subspace of \(X^*\). The study is concerned to such spaces \(X\), that admit an equivalent Gâteaux differentiable norm that is \(Y\)-lower semicontinuous. Some applications are presented in the area of Corson's sets and on the problems of separability of supports on Corson compact sets. Several open problems with the origin in the presented theory are discussed.
