By relaxing the triangle inequality in the definition of a norm to \[ \|x+y\|\leq \kappa(\|x\|+\|y\|) \] with \(\kappa\geq 1\) we obtain a quasi-norm, whereas a condition \[ \|x+y\|^p\leq\|x\|^p+\|y\|^p \] with \(0<p\leq 1\) leads to a notion of a \(p\)-norm. Every \(p\)-norm is a (continuous) semi-norm but a semi-norm is not necessarily a \(p\)-norm (although it is always equivalent to some \(p\)-norm). The authors present a new technique of proving stability of functional equations in real quasi-normed spaces which are not \(p\)-normed ones. As an example, they prove the stability of the functional equation \[ f(2x+y)+f(2x-y)=f(x+y)+f(x-y)+2f(2x)-2f(x) \] where \(f: X\to Y\) maps a real quasi-normed space \(X\) into a real quasi-Banach space \(Y\). The obtained result improves the one given by \textit{A. Najati} and \textit{M. B. Moghimi} [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 337, No. 1, 399--415 (2008; Zbl 1127.39055)]. Actually, not only the considered spaces are more general but also the approximation constant is better.
