Let \(\Lambda=\{\lambda_k\}\) be a sequence of points in the unit disk of the complex plane and \(N\) the class of Nevanlinna functions. The trace space \(N|\Lambda\) consists of sequences \(w=\{w_n\}\) for which there is a positive harmonic function \(H\) such that \(\log^+|w_n|\leq H(\lambda_n)\) for all \(n\in\mathbb{N}\). Then \(\Lambda\) is called an interpolating sequence for \(N\) if the trace space \(N|\Lambda\) is ideal, i.e., if for every sequence \(v=\{v_k\}\in\ell^\infty\), there is an \(f\in{N}\) such that \(f(\lambda_k)=v_k\) for all \(k\in\mathbb{N}\). A more general characterization for \(N|\Lambda\) is given in this paper. First a recursive definition for the (non-confluent) divided difference \(\Delta^n \omega(\lambda_1,\ldots,\lambda_{n+1})\) of order \(n\) in the pseudohyperbolic metric for a function \(\omega\) is introduced. If \(X^{n-1}(\Lambda)\) is the set of all functions for which the divided differences of order \(n-1\) are uniformly bounded by a positive harmonic function \(H\), that is, \[ \sup_{\lambda_1,\ldots,\lambda_n} |\Delta^{n-1}\omega(\lambda_1,\ldots,\lambda_n)|\exp\{-[H(\lambda_1)+\cdots+H(\lambda_n)]\}<\infty, \] then the main theorem of the paper states that \({N}|\Lambda=X^{n-1}(\Lambda)\) if and only if \(\Lambda\) is the union of \(n\) interpolating sequences for \({N}\). A similar result for \(H^\infty\) functions was given in [\textit{V. I. Vasyunin}, Zap. Nauchn. Semin. Leningr. Otd. Mat. Inst. Steklova 135, 31--35 (1984; Zbl 0545.41005)].
