The wavelet theory is a far-reaching generalization of Fourier analysis and has important applications in signal processing and numerical mathematics. Up to now, there exist some well-written, short introductions to this topic such as [\textit{C. K. Chui}, Wavelets: a mathematical tool for signal analysis. Philadelphia, PA: SIAM, Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (1997; Zbl 0903.94007); \textit{C. Blatter}, Wavelets. A primer. Transl. from the German. Natick, MA: A K Peters (1998; Zbl 0928.42016)]. The textbook under review is a roughly written introduction to basic concepts of wavelet theory and wavelet-based numerical solutions of differential equations and inverse problems. It is closely linked to the wavelet MATLAB toolbox. Almost all proofs of essential results are omitted. Unfortunately, several essential notions are not or incorrectly defined; the book is not written in a sufficiently good mathematical style. The first part (with Chapters 1--2) is a short summary of normed spaces and Fourier analysis. The second part (with Chapters 3--5) presents basic notions of wavelet theory, such as multiresolution analysis, special wavelets, and fast wavelet algorithms. In the third part (with Chapters 6--9), wavelet-based methods for numerical solution of differential equations are sketched. The last part (with Chapters 10--11) sketches wavelet-based methods for numerical solution of inverse problems. For Chapters 2 and 3, some exercises (without solutions) are given. An index and a list of symbols are missing.
