The paper concerns with boundary value problems \[ \mathcal{L}u=\sigma u^q+\mu \quad \text{in }\Omega, \qquad u=0 \quad \text{on }\partial\Omega, \] in the sublinear case $0 < q < 1$ with finite generalized energy $E_\gamma[u]:=\int_{\Omega} |\nabla u|^2 u^{\gamma -1} dx <0$ for $\gamma>0$. Here, the operator $\mathcal{L}u :=-\nabla\cdot(A \nabla u)$ with bounded measurable coefficients is assumed to be uniformly elliptic, and $\sigma$ and $\mu$ are nonnegative locally integrable functions (or Radon measures) on an arbitrary domain $\Omega \subseteq\mathbb{R}^n$, $n\geq 2$. \par For the existence of a positive solution $u$, necessary and sufficient conditions on $\sigma$ and $\mu$ are derived. The result gives sufficient conditions for the existence of a positive solution $u$ in the homogeneous Sobolev (or Dirichlet) space $\dot{W}^{1,p}_0(\Omega)$ for $1 < p <2$ when $0< \gamma < 1$.
