Let $X$ be a Hilbert $C^*$-module over a $C^*$-algebra $A$. For each $x\in X$, the absolute value of $x$ is defined by $|x|=\langle x, x\rangle^{\frac{1}{2}}$. It is easy to show that $\mathcal{C}= \mathrm{span}\overline{\{\langle x, y\rangle; x, y\in X\}}$ is a closed two-sided ideal (in fact, a $C^*$-subalgebra) of $A$. \textit{R.-L. Jiang} [Math. Inequal. Appl. 16, No. 3, 743--749 (2013; Zbl 1282.46048)] proved that $|x+y|\leq|x|+|y|$ holds for all $x, y\in X$ if and only if $\mathcal{C}$ is a commutative $C^*$-subalgebra of $A$. In this paper, the authors show that $|xa|=|x||a|$ for each $x\in X$ and $a\in \mathcal{C}$ if and only if $\mathcal{C}$ is a commutative $C^*$-subalgebra of $A$.
