This book describes several problems of applied mechanics, which are analysed in matrix form, using the properties of eigenvalues and eigenvectors. The elements of the theory of vectors and matrices are presented in Chapters 1 and 2. Chapter 3 is devoted to quadratic forms. Chapter 4 is connected with the elements of rigid body mechanics. The descriptions of strain tensors and stress tensors are given in Chapter 5. Chapter 6 is concerned with modal analysis and its applications. The classical mathematical apparatus allows to investigate in discrete form not only mathematical structures such as quadratic forms, but also vibrations and stability problems in rigid body mechanics, continuum mechanics (after discretization of continuum), and for dynamical systems. A substantial number of engineering applications for discrete systems illustrates this book. Also, the investigations of different vibrations of continuous bars are presented. The book can serve as an introductory text for anybody interested in determining of eigenvalues and eigenvectors of mechanical systems, as well as frequencies and forms of free vibrations. Graduate students and researchers in mechanical and computational engineering will also find this book very useful.
