The authors consider $\tau$-pseudodifferential operators, $0\le\tau\le 1$, with symbol $a(x,\eta)$: $$Op_\tau(a)\,f(x)= \iint e^{2\pi i(x-y)\eta} a((1-\tau)x+ \tau y,\eta)\,f(y)\,dy\,d\eta.$$ The symbol is assumed to belong to so-called Wiener amalgam spaces $W(FL^p, L^q)(\mathbb{R}^{2d})$, $1\le p$, $q\le\infty$, which express roughly speaking local $FL^p$ regularity and global $L^q$ decay of $a(x,\eta)$ in $\mathbb{R}^{2d}$.\par Boundedness of $Op_\tau(a)$ is proved in the modulation spaces $M^{r,s}$, under precise assumptions involving $p$, $q$, $r$, $s$. Interesting counterexamples are also provided, concerning operators $Op_\tau(a)$ which fail to be bounded in the limit cases $\tau=0$, $\tau=1$. The proofs are given in terms of time-frequency analysis, cf. \textit{K. Gröchenig} [Foundations of time-frequency analysis. Boston, MA: Birkhäuser (2001; Zbl 0966.42020)], by using the properties of the short-time Fourier transform and $\tau$-Wigner distributions, see \textit{P. Boggiatto} et al. [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 362, No. 9, 4955--4981 (2010; Zbl 1200.47064)].
