Let $\mathcal{I}\rightarrow \mathcal{A}\rightarrow \mathcal{B}$ be an extension of $C^*$-algebras, where $\mathcal{A}$ is unital, $\mathcal{B}$ is a Cuntz-Krieger algebra and $\mathcal{I}$ is stably isomorphic to a Cuntz-Krieger one. Then $\mathcal{A}$ is a Cuntz-Krieger algebra $\Leftrightarrow$ $\mathcal{A}$ has real rank zero $\Leftrightarrow$ the exponential map $\mathrm{K_0}(\mathcal{B})$ $\rightarrow$ $\mathrm{K_1}(\mathcal{I})$ of the extension vanishes. This follows from the characte\-rization, in $C^*$-algebraic terms, of the Cuntz-Krieger algebras class, based on studies going back to \textit{J. Cuntz} and \textit{W. Krieger} [Invent. Math. 56, 251--268 (1980; Zbl 0434.46045)].
