The author gives a numerical criterion to decide whether the \(\ell\)-adic sheaf associated to the one-parameter exponential sums \(t\mapsto \sum\limits_{x\in \mathbb F_p}\psi(x^d+tx)\) has finite monodromy or not. Here \(p\) is a prime, \(\mathbb F_p\) the finite field of \(p\) elements, \(d>1\) an integer, and \(\psi\) denotes the additive canonical character of \(\mathbb F_p\). He also works out some explicit cases where this is computable.
