The critical height of a rational map over \(\mathbb{Q}\) is the asymptotic growth rate of the Weil height (that is, the canonical height), summed over all critical orbits of the map. This height plays the role of a canonical height on the moduli space of all rational functions of a given degree. J. Silverman, who introduced this notion, conjectured that the critical height is commensurate to an ample Weil height, provided one avoids certain maps (the Lattès examples). The author proves Silverman's conjecture.
