There are several different definitions for the notion of points in general position in \(\mathbb{P}^2\), some of which, due to the authors, are finalized to very ampleness criteria for rank 2 vector bundles [\textit{A. Alzati} and \textit{A. Tortora}, Rev. Mat. Complut. 28, No. 3, 623--654 (2015; Zbl 1330.14070)]. In the paper under review a definition of general position for distinct points on a geometrically ruled rational surface \(\mathbb{F}_e\) is introduced with the aim of obtaining very ampleness criteria for rank 2 vector bundles. Let \(e\geq1\) and let \(C_0\) and \(f\) denote the section of minimal self-intersection and a fiber of \(\mathbb F_e\), respectively. Roughly speaking, \(\delta\) distinct points of \(\mathbb F_e\) are said to be in general position if they impose linearly independent linear conditions to any section in \(|C_0+xf|\) in order to be contained in it, for any integer \(x \geq 0\). Relying on this notion, the authors prove the very ampleness of any rank 2 vector bundle \(E\) fitting into an exact sequence of type \(0 \to L \to E \to M \to 0\), where \(L\) and \(M\) are two line bundles of some special form with \(Lf=1\) or \(2\) and \(Mf=1\), provided that some conditions are satisfied; one of the equivalent formulation of these conditions is in fact that the zero locus of any section \(s \in H^0(\mathbb F_e, E)\) giving rise to a smooth surface in \(|\mathcal O_{\mathbb P(E)}(1)|\) satisfies the general position definition above.
