Let \(G\) be a finite group and \(p\) a prime. Consider the map between the Burnside ring of \(G\) and the Grothendieck ring of \(F_p[G]\)-modules (equivalently the ring of Brauer characters) which takes a \(G\)-set to its associated permutation module. In this paper, the author classifies, for all finite groups, the primitive quotient of the kernel of this map; that is for each \(G\), the kernel modulo elements coming from the kernel for proper subquotients of \(G\). He identifies exactly which groups have non-trivial primitive quotient, and he gives generators for the primitive quotient in the solvable case.
