The author presents the result of his PhD studies in the area of optimization problems arising at container ports. After a brief introduction (Chapter 1), he presents a literature review in mechanism design and machine scheduling, which is probably the first so detailed review in this context (Chapter 2). In Chapter 3, two machine scheduling problems arising in container ports are introduced and analyzed with methods from the field of algorithmic mechanism design. In Chapter 4 and 5, the author considers classical optimization problems dealing with internal container moving. In particular, in Chapter 4, the partitioning min-max weighted matching problem is analyzed, while in Chapter 5 the straddle carrier routing problem is discussed. The research is concluded with a summary and possible further research directions in Chapter 6. The book is a valuable position for the researchers in the area.
