Let \(F\) denote a non-Archimedean local field. The authors study the restriction of irreducible admissible genuine representations of the 2-fold metaplectic cover \(\overline{G}\to G=\mathrm{GL}(2,F)\) to the inverse image in \(\overline{G}\) of a maximal torus of \(G\). Though the reviewer glosses over this detail in the summary below, some of the authors' results require that the residue characteristic of \(F\) be odd. A maximal torus \(T\) of \(G\) is \(F\)-isomorphic either to the diagonal subgroup A of \(G\) or to the invertible subgroup \(E^\times\) of E/F, where E is a quadratic extension of \(F\). Let \(N:E\to F\) denote the norm map and let \(E^1\) denote the norm 1 subgroup of \(E^\times\). There are two steps involved in studying the above-mentioned restriction. (1) Reduce the question on restriction from \(\overline{G}\) to \(\overline{T}=\overline{E^\times}\) to a question on restriction from \(\overline{\mathrm{SL}(2,F)}\) to \(\overline{E^1}\). (2) Using a correspondence between irreducible genuine supercuspidal representations of \(\overline{\mathrm{SL}(2,F)}\) and irreducible supercuspidal representations of \({\mathrm{SL}(2,F)}\), we reduce the question on restriction from \(\overline{\mathrm{SL}(2,F)}\) to \(\overline{E^1}\) to a question on restriction from \({\mathrm{SL}(2,F)}\) to \({E^1}\). Let \(\overline{Z}\) denote the center of \(\overline{G}\) (this is isomorphic to the inverse image in \(\overline{G}\) of the set of squares of scalar matrices of \(G\)). Let \(\pi\) denote an irreducible admissible genuine representations of \(\overline{G}\) and let \(\omega_\pi\) denote its central character. The main result of the authors is a precise description of the irreducible components of \(\pi|_{\overline{T}}\) in terms of those of \(\mathrm{Ind}_{\overline{Z}}^{\overline{T}}\omega_\pi\).
