This monograph presents in a clear and concise manner the descriptions (theory and its applications) about the singular solutions in plasticity. The origin of these singular solutions lies in the maximum friction surface. The monograph runs into six chapters. The first chapter is introductory and provides the definition of the subject, coordinate systems and fundamental equations, material models, and maximum friction law. The reviewer did like the fact that this and all other five chapters are supplemented by useful and related references to enable the interested reader to get deeper knowledge of the subject covered in the chapter. In the second chapter, the author introduces rigid plastic materials followed by the subsections on plane strain deformations, axisymmetric deformations, compression of a layer between rough plates including the statement of the problem and its solution. The treatment for rigid viscoplastic materials accompanied by descriptions of plane strain deformations, axisymmetric deformation, and compression of a layer between rough plates is presented in the third chapter. The fourth chapter on anisotropic rigid plastic materials extends the development to include anisotropic materials for plane strain deformation, and compression of a layer between rough plates. The numerical method to deal with the singularity solutions for the problems described in the previous two chapters is presented in Chapter 5. The method is illustrated for the following types of problems: the strain rate intensity factor in characteristic coordinates, a benchmark problem with detailed description of the numerical scheme, verification and accuracy of the numerical scheme, and the strain rate intensity factor in compression of a finite layer. Finally, Chapter 6 demonstrates the application of the theory and numerical solution methodology for the generation of finite grain layers near frictional interfaces, and the upper bound method which includes statement of the problem, general approach, and illustrative example. The reviewer believes that this monograph will serve as a useful fundamental or reference tools for the interested audience comprising practicing engineers, researchers and others working in the field of singular solutions in plasticity. The monograph is written in a lucid and concise manner. The value of the monograph is further enhanced by an extensive list of references and illustrative examples to exhibit the application of the numerical solution methodology to practical problems.
