If \({\mathcal V}_X\) denotes the set of all closed vector subspaces of a topological vector space \(X\), a quasi-complementor on \(X\) is a mapping \(\sigma : {\mathcal V}_X \to {\mathcal V}_X\) which is antitone, self-inverse and has the property that \(M \cap \sigma(M) = \{0\}\) for all \(M \in {\mathcal V}_X\). \textit{S. Kakutani} and \textit{G. W. Mackey} proved that an infinite-dimensional complex Banach space \(X\) which has a quasi-complementor \(\sigma\) can be endowed with an inner product such that (1) \(\sigma(M)\) is the orthogonal complement of \(M\) for all \(M \in {\mathcal V}_X\) and (2) the induced norm is equivalent to the original one, in other words, \(X\) is isomorphic to a Hilbert space [Bull. Am. Math. Soc. 52, 727--733 (1946; Zbl 0060.26305)]. The authors prove that a part of this result holds in a more general setting. The main result of the paper reads as follows: If \(X\) is a Hausdorff topological vector space with a quasi-complementor \(\sigma\) such that two additional conditions are satisfied (which hold if \(X\) is an infinite-dimensional complex Banach space), then there exists an inner product on \(X\) such that (1) holds. \newline Some related results are proven.
