    Consider the operator \(L\) defined by \[ (Lz)(x):= Bz'(x)+ Q(x)z(x)\quad\text{for }x\in (0,1), \] where \(B\) and \(Q(x)\) are the \(2\times 2\) matrices \[ B=\begin{pmatrix} 1 & 0\\ 0 &-1\end{pmatrix},\;Q(x)= \begin{pmatrix} 0 & q(x)\\ q(1-x) & 0\end{pmatrix},\quad q\in C([0,1],\mathbb{C}), \] under the periodic boundary condition \(z(0)= z(1)\). The authors study the spectrum of \(L\) by means of the operators \[ \begin{aligned} (L^+y)(x) &= y'(x)+ q(x) (1-x),\quad y(0)= (1),\\ (L^-y)(x) &= y'(x)- q(x) y(1-x),\quad y(0)= y(1).\end{aligned} \] They prove the set of eigenvalues of \(L\) coincides with the union of the sets of eigenvalues of the operators \(L^+\) and \(L^-\), and that the set of all root functions of \(L\) is a Riesz basis in \(L^2_2(0,1)\).
