In the paper, the author studies the spectral properties of the second-order differential operator \(L\) acting on the space \(H = L_2(G)\) ( \( G = (0, 1)\)) and is generated by the differential operation \[ ly = y'' + p_1(x)y' + p_2(x)y, x\in G, p_1(x) \in C(G), p_2(x) \in L^1(G), \] acting on the set of functions \[ y \in D = \{y \in H : y \in W_2^2 (G) \cap N (U), ly \in H\}, \] where \[ \{ y \in H:y \subset AC^2 (\overline {C)} ,\,\,y^{(2)} \in H\} \] Here \(AC^k (\overline C ),\,\,k = 1,2,\) is the class of functions \(f\) absolutely continuous together with \(f^{(k - 1)}\) on the interval \(G = [0, 1];\) \(N (U)\) is the kernel of the functional \(U(y)\) : \(W_2^2 (G)\to C^2\) given by the formula \[ U(y) = \int\limits_0^1 {y'(x)d\nu _1 (x)} + \int\limits_0^1 {y(x)d\nu _2 (x)},\quad\nu _k = \begin{pmatrix} {\nu _{k1} } \\ {\nu _{k2} } \\ \end{pmatrix},\quad k = 1,2, \] \(\nu _{kj}\) are functions of bounded variation on the interval \(G\), right continuous at each point of the interval \( G\). The functions \( p_k(x)\) and \(\nu _{kj}\) , \(k = 1, 2,\) are complex-valued. The properties of the adjoints of these operators are studied by using and developing Il'in's spectral method.
