Two locally quasi-convex group topologies on an abelian group are called compatible if they give rise to the same character group. The main result of the paper is: If \((G_i)_{i\in I}\) is a family of locally compact noncountably compact separable abelian groups and if \(|I|\leq\mathfrak{c}\) then there is no normal group topology on \(G=\prod_{i\in I}\) which is compatible with the product topology. This holds in particular for \(\mathbb Z^{\mathfrak{c}}\). In the proof, the authors apply Jones' Lemma which states that if the extent of a separable space is \(\geq \mathfrak{c}\), then the space is not normal.
