This book, divided into nine chapters, gives an introduction to genetic algorithms. It begins with a presentation of useful background and an overview of the necessary terminology to understand how genetic algorithms work, followed by a description of all the parameters that play a role in the performance of a genetic algorithm and how they can be fine-tuned to ensure a good result. The fourth chapter deals with multimodality and describes techniques that can be used to avoid an algorithm to get stuck in a local optimum. The next two chapters consider the complexities of adding constraints and multiple objective functions to a genetic algorithm, and methods for their efficient introduction. The last part of the book considers advanced topics which include the theoretical background of genetic algorithms, the link of genetic algorithms to machine learning and applications of genetic algorithms. Examples of these applications include unsupervised regression, machine-learning ensembles and the parallelization of genetic algorithms.
