Let \(X\) be a Banach function space contained in the space of measurable functions on \(\mathbb{R}^n\), a function \(f\) is said to be in the Morrey function space \({\mathcal M}_u^X\) associated to a measurable function \(u(x,r)\), defined on \(\mathbb{R}^n\times (0,\infty)\), if it satisfies \[ \|f\|_{{\mathcal M}_u^X}=\sup_{x_0 \in \mathbb{R}^n, r>0} \frac{1}{u(x_0,r)} \|\chi_{B(x_0,r)} f \|_X <+\infty. \] The main result of the paper consists of the extension of the extrapolation theory introduced by Rubio de Francia to Morrey spaces \({\mathcal M}_u^X\). This extension allows to obtain some applications such as a version of Fefferman-Stein vector-valued maximal inequality, a John-Nirenberg inequality on Morrey spaces and, finally, a new characterization of \(BMO\) in terms of Morrey type space, under suitable conditions on \(X\) and \(u\). Moreover, it is shown that, under some assumptions on \(u\) and \(X\), the functional \[ \|f\|_{BMO_{{\mathcal M}_u^X}}=\sup_B \frac{\|(f-f_B)\chi_B \|_{{\mathcal M}_u^X}}{\|\chi_B\|_{{\mathcal M}_u^X}}, \] is mutually equivalent with the classical one defining \(BMO\), where the norm is taken in \(L^1\) instead of taking it in the Morrey space \({\mathcal M}_u^X\).
