The spectrum \(\omega(G)\) of a finite group \(G\) is the set of orders of its elements, and groups with equal spectra are said to be isospectral. The problem of recognition of nonabelian simple groups by spectrum has been studied extensively in recent years. In particular, it was proved that a finite group \(G\) isospectral to a sufficiently large simple group \(S\) must be an almost simple group with socle \(S.\) Motivated by this result, the author says that a finite almost simple \(G\) with socle \(S\) is admissible if \(G\) and \(S\) have the same sets of orders of elements and the main result of this paper is a description of admissible groups for linear and unitary groups over fields of odd characteristic.
