The paper develops a Galois theory for normal extensions in a symmetric monoidal category, based on the ubiquitous formula \[ A\otimes A\mathop{\longrightarrow}\limits^\sim \prod_{\gamma\in\Gamma} A \] which arises in various contexts, including Galois theory of commutative rings, coverings in topology, étale morphisms in algebraic geometry, etc. \textit{P. Balmer}'s concept of degree in a tensor-triangulated category [Algebra Number Theory 8, No. 3, 767--779 (2014; Zbl 1305.18047)] is extended to symmetric monoidal categories, and its connection to the number of morphisms is studied. Other topics are splitting rings, extensions of scalars, the Balmer spectrum of a tensor-triangulated category, and applications to modular representation theory.
