The concept of extremal system is defined in a locally convex topological space, starting from the notion of local set extremality in variational analysis. Fundamental related results are derived: set extremality and separation, sufficient conditions for extremality of convex sets, approximate and exact versions of the convex extremal principle in Banach spaces. Exact intersection rule for the normal cone is derived under the bounded extremality condition, emphasizing the case of close subsets of a reflexive Banach space. A precise representation of support functions for convex set intersections is given via infimal convolution of the support functions to the intersection components under the difference interiority condition.
