This article provides a result about the scattering of solutions of the \(L^2\)-supercritical defocusing NLS with a smooth steplike potential. The time-dimensional setup is \(\mathbb{R}\times\mathbb{R}^d\) and the potential V under consideration is time independent and has two limiting values with respect to \(x_1\) and is a periodic function with respect to \(x_2,\ldots ,x_d\). The first result about the scattering of the solutions of the Cauchy problem with large data requires the following assumptions: first \(\nabla V\) goes uniformly to zero when \(|x_1|\) goes to infinity. Second V is repulsive. Third the standard \(L^1-L^{\infty}\) decay estimate for the linear Schrödinger equation without potential holds for the linear Schrödinger operator with potential V (this is known to be true when \(d=1\)). The proof of this result uses a profile decomposition which is by now well-known and a virial identity allows to exclude concentration. Then, thanks to Davies-Simon one knows when \(d=1\) that the scattered solution scatters again when \(t\rightarrow\pm\infty\) to solutions of the linear Schrödinger equation with \(V\) replaced by its limiting values at \(\pm\infty\). This result which is true in \(L^2\) assuming some polynomial decrease of the potential actually holds in \(H^1\).
