For a large frequency number \(k>0,\) the author studies the existence and multiplicity of real-valued solutions of the semilinear Helmholtz equation \[ -\Delta u-k^2\,u=Q(x)\,|u|^{p-2}\,u,\quad\text{in }\mathbb{R}^n \,(n\geq 2),\tag{1} \] where \(p\in \big(2\,(n+1)/(n-1), 2\,n/(n-2)\big)\) , \(Q\geq 0\) is bounded and continuous, and satisfies the condition \(\displaystyle \limsup_{||x||\to \infty}\,Q(x)<Q_0:=\sup\limits_{x\in\mathbb{R}^n} Q(x)\). Let \(M=\{x\in \mathbb{R}^n;\, Q(x)=Q_0\}\), \(M_{\delta}=\{x\in \mathbb{R}^n; \mathrm{dist}\,(x, M)\leq \delta\}\), and let \(\mathrm{cat}_{M_{\delta}}\,(M)\) be the Lusternik-Schnirelmann category of \(M\) with respect to \(M_{\delta}\) (the least number of closed contractible sets in \(M_{\delta}\) which cover \(M\)). It is proved that for every \(\delta>0\) there exists \(k(\delta)>0\) such that the equation (1) has at least \(\mathrm{cat}_{M_{\delta}}\,(M)\) nontrivial solutions for all \(k>k(\delta)\). The behavior of these solutions as \(k\to+\infty\) is also studied.
