Let \(\mathcal{T}(n,r)\) denote the subspace of \(\mathbb{K}[x,y]\) spanned by the Tutte polynomials of all rank \(r\) matroids on an \(n\) element set. It follows from work of \textit{H. Derksen} [J. Algebr. Comb. 30, No. 1, 43--86 (2009; Zbl 1231.05276)] that \(\mathcal{T}(n,r)\) is spanned by the Tutte polynomials of rank-\(r\) size-\(n\) `freedom matroids'. In the paper under review, the author provides two bases for \(\mathcal{T}(n,r)\). Each basis consists of a set of Tutte polynomials of a family of freedom matroids. (We omit the definitions of freedom matroids and details of these families from this review.) A consequence is that \(\mathcal{T}(n,r)\) has dimension \(r(n-r)+1\). Among other results, the author includes two new proofs of a result of \textit{T. Brylawski} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 171, 235--282 (1972; Zbl 0224.05007), Theorem 6.6] that gives a linear relation between the coefficients of the Tutte polynomial of a matroid.
