The speciality index of a projective curve \(C\) is the maximum \(t\) such that \(\omega_C(-t)\) has non-trivial sections. The celebrated proof of the Halphen bound for the genus of space curves, found by \textit{L. Gruson} and \textit{C. Peskine} [Lect. Notes Math. 687, 31--59 (1978; Zbl 0412.14011); Asterisque 71--72, 219--229 (1980; Zbl 1382.14008)], is partly based on the observation that the speciality index of a curve in \(\mathbb P^3\), not contained in surfaces of degree smaller than \(s\), is bounded by a function of \(d=\deg(C)\) and \(s\). Similar bounds for the speciality index of curves in higher dimensional projective spaces are known only under restrictive hypothesis. The authors introduce a hypothesis on the geometry of hypersurfaces containing a curve \(C\subset\mathbb P^5\), in oder to bound the speciality index of curves not contained in hypersurfaces of degree \( {<}s\). The main result says that if \(C\) is contained in two smooth hypersurfaces \(F,G\) of degrees respectively \(d_F,d_G\), with \(d_F>d_G>s\), and moreover the 2-th Neron-Severi group of \(F\) is generated by the linear section class, then the speciality index of \(C\) is bounded above by \(s+d_F+d_G-6+d/(snk)\).
