    Let $A$ be a central simple algebra over a number field $K$. The theorem of Hasse, Maass, and Schilling states that an element of $K$ occurs as a reduced norm if and only if it is positive at each real place of $K$ where $A$ is ramified. An integral version of this theorem is studied. It may happen that an element of the ring of integers in $K$ is a reduced norm of an element in $A$, but not of an integer in $A$. The authors call such an element an ``outlier''. It is shown that outliers do not exist if the Eichler condition holds for $A$. Reviewer's remark: According to \textit{I. Reiner} (see [Maximal orders. London etc.: Academic Press (1975; Zbl 0305.16001)], Section~34), the theorem can be traced back to Eichler.
