Let \(X\subset \mathbb{P}^N\) be a variety of dimension \(n\) and let \(E\) be a coherent sheaf on \(X\). One says that \(E\) is Ulrich, if under a general projection \(\pi:X\to\mathbb{P}^n\), \(\pi_*E\) is the trivial bundle. Whether such sheaves exist for all projective varieties is not known and is a question raised by \textit{D. Eisenbud} and \textit{F.-O. Schreyer} [J. Am. Math. Soc. 16, No. 3, 537--575, appendix 576--579 (2003; Zbl 1069.14019)]. Even a weaker question, originally raised by Hochster, whether sheaves \(E\) as above so that \(\pi_*E \) is a direct sum of line bundles, known as Arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay sheaves, exists is not known even for smooth varieties in characteristic zero. The answer to both these questions is affirmative for any one dimensional scheme and so the authors discuss a weaker notion, which they call \(\delta\)-Ulrich sheaves defined as follows. A reflexive sheaf \(E\) on \(X\) is \(\delta\)-Ulrich, if for some smooth one dimensional linear section \(Y\) of \(X\), \(E_{|Y}\) is Ulrich. The main existence theorem they prove is that any normal Arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay variety carries a \(\delta\)-Ulrich sheaf.
