The book covers selected topics of control systems theory and system identification by means of a novel set of orthogonal functions, called ``Hybrid Functions'' (HF's) and being combinations of sample-and-hold and right-handed-triangular functions, and using this platform focuses particularly on time-invariant, time-varying and delayed systems. It contains 15 chapters, two appendices, index terms and list of symbols often used in the text. Chapter 1 has an introductory character and is devoted to the selected families of orthogonal non-sinusoidal functions. Among various types of orthogonal sets, it contains definitions and basic properties of Harr, Rademacher and Walsh functions. On this background, it introduces also a class of hybrid functions (HF), which are further characterized in Chapter 2 in detail. The HF family -- fundamental for the rest of the book -- is next examined and discussed in Chapters 3, 4 and 5, where its applicability to the problem of function approximation as well as integration and differentiation is presented. Chapters 6 and 7, in turn, cover selected aspects of solving linear differential equations and discuss convolution integrals with the help of the HF class of functions. Based on the content introduced in these chapters, further parts of the book are devoted to the selected aspects of the theory of linear systems. In particular, Chapters 8 and 9 focus on the analysis of stationary and non-stationary systems in state space representation and HF domain. Chapter 10, in turn, focuses on the multi-delay systems and, in this context, covers selected problems of approximation and integration of functions with time delay by employing hybrid functions set. Directly after Chapter 11 devoted to the analysis of open-loop and closed-loop systems, the authors investigate the applicability of the hybrid functions to the identification of linear systems in Chapters 12 and 13. The presented approaches use the state space representations and, as previously, concern respectively stationary and non-stationary systems. Selected techniques of system identification based on the deconvolution concept are then presented and numerically investigated in Chapter 14, whereas parameter estimation problems of transfer function by using hybrid functions methodology are described in Chapter 15. In summary, the book is an interesting introduction to the theory and applications of the orthogonal hybrid functions. It is written in an accessible way, although some formulas have rather extended form. Most of the theoretical considerations are, however, well-illustrated by numerical examples, which greatly facilitates understanding of the content and makes the book user-friendly. The corresponding MATLAB scripts are attached in the Appendix. The book can be recommended for PhD students and practitioners interested in the field of control systems engineering.
