The authors consider the following Kirchhoff-type problem \[ \begin{cases} \left(a+\lambda\int_{\mathbb R^3}|\nabla u(x)|^2\,dx+\lambda b\int_{\mathbb R^3} |u(x)|^2\,dx\right) (-\Delta u+bu)=f(u) & \text{in } \mathbb R^3\\ u\in H^1(\mathbb R^3),\quad u>0 & \text{in } \mathbb R^3, \end{cases} \] where \(\lambda \geq 0\), \(a\) and \(b\) are positive constants and the nonlinearity \(f\) has a critical growth. In the first part of the paper, using variational methods, the authors prove the existence of at least one nontrivial solution of the problem under consideration for \(\lambda>0\) sufficiently small, under suitable growth assumptions on \(f\) different from the Ambrosetti-Rabinowitz condition. Later they study the asymptotic behavior of the solutions as \(\lambda\to 0\).
