The purpose of this paper is to study the instability of solitary waves for a generalized derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equation (gDNLS) \[ i\partial_t u=-\partial_x^2 u -i| u|^{2\sigma}\partial_x u, \quad (t,x)\in\mathbb{R}^2,\quad u\in\mathbb{C},\quad\sigma>0. \] It is known that (gDNLS) has a two-parameter family of solitary waves and three conserved quantities. The main theorem states that for certain values of \(\sigma\), a certain solitary wave is unstable at a certain point. The proofs use Lyapunov functional methods, Taylor's formula and implicit function theorem.
