Let \(p\) be a prime number, \(G\) a compact Lie group and \(T\) a maximal torus. Let \(BG\) and \(BT\) be classifying spaces of \(G\) and \(T\), \(W=W_{G}(T)\) be the Weyl group and \(H^{*}(-)=H^{*}(-,{\mathbb Z}_{(p)})\). Then one has the restriction map \[ {\rho}^{*}_{H}: H^{*}(BG) \rightarrow H^{*}(BG)/Tor \subset H^{*}(BT)^{W} \] It is known (cf. [\textit{M. Feshbach}, Topology 20, 93--95 (1981; Zbl 0457.55010)]) that if \(H^{*}(G)\) has no \(p\)-torsion then \({\rho}^{*}_{H}\) is surjective. There are cases that it is not surjective if \(H^*(G)\) has \(p\)-torsion (cf. [\textit{A. Borel}, Topics in the homology theory of fibre bundles. Lectures given at the University of Chicago, 1954. Berlin-Heidelberg-New York: Springer-Verlag (1967; Zbl 0158.20503)]). Let \(G_{{\mathbb C}}\) and \(T_{{\mathbb C}}\) be the reductive group over \({\mathbb C}\) and its maximal torus. The author studies analogous restriction maps \({\rho}^{*}_{\mathrm{CH}}\) for Chow groups of these algebraic groups. He proves that if \(G\) is simply connected and \(H^{*}(G)\) has \(p\)-torsion then the map \({\rho}^{*}_{\mathrm{CH}}\) is never surjective. The author also shows that for \(G=\mathrm{Spin}(7)\) and \(p=2\) each Griffith element in \(CH^{*}(BG)\) is detected by an element in \({\Omega}^{*}(BT)\) where \({\Omega}^{*}(X)= MGL^{2*,*}(X){\otimes}_{MU^{*}_{(p)}}BP^{*}\) is the \(BP\)-version of algebraic cobordism.
